Chicanx and Latinx Studies Minor

Courses for the Chicanx and Latinx Studies minor explore the range of Chicanx and Latinx experiences in the United States and the Americas. View our official course catalog for a complete list of approved Chicanx and Latinx Studies minor courses. Listed below are the requirements for the minor.

Requirements:

• Completion of 7 courses (28 units), 5 of which must be upper-division.
• Elective courses must be selected from the Chicanx and Latinx Studies Course Offerings
• Students may petition to receive credit for courses not listed in the catalog.
• Students may take no more than three upper-division courses in any one department.
• All courses counting toward the minor must be taken for a letter grade.
• Students can only overlap a maximum of two courses (8 units) between their major and minor.
• All study abroad courses must be petitioned. 
• Effective Fall 2023: There is no language requirement for the CLS minor. Students may take up to 10 units of language courses toward the minor if they choose.

How to Declare the Chicanx and Latinx Studies Minor 

1. Read the general university requirements for a minor.
2. Log in to the Major/Minor tool and submit the declaration. See the sample declaration provided below.
3. Allow 3 to 5 business days for your minor declaration to be reviewed. Check your degree audit to confirm your declaration of the minor was processed.  
4. Message the Chicanx and Latinx Studies Program Coordinator through the Virtual Advising Center (VAC) if you have questions about your audit or would like to petition a course for the minor.

Once logged in to the Major/Minor Tool, please list only a total of 7 courses. See the sample provided below to gain familiarity with the minor requirements. Please keep in mind that your exact courses may be different than below depending on how many lower-division and upper-division courses you take.
